Where do I even begin! I’ve known Amanda since we both attended Lake Zurich Middle School South. I was pumped when she asked me to be her photographer, and even more excited when I met John, her perfect match. Amanda’s daughter, Makayla, played a huge role in their wedding, and she was adorable as a flower girl.
Amanda went the traditional route of making John wait to see her until she walked down the aisle. Seeing Amanda’s tears of pure happiness made me so happy for my childhood friend!
Before the wedding the bride’s side got ready at Amanda’s parents house — the same house where we used to watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer and dance to Christina Aguilera songs back in middle school. My how time flies!
Amanda’s dress was breathtaking. The detail was beautiful, the train elegant. When we pulled up to the church, a few clouds rolled in and it began to softly rain — an extra bout of good luck on their wedding day.
The groomsmen were hilarious; one happened to be Adam, my neighbor. After the ceremony, we took a few group photos and then let the bridal party relax on the party bus while Amanda and John had a quiet moment at the cemetery across from the church, visiting her grandma’s grave. An emotional moment for all of us, I know Amanda’s grandma was beaming down from heaven, proud of her beautiful granddaughter.
The reception was gorgeous — Amanda really went all out with the details! My favorite part had to be the controller-shaped rice krispie treats, an ode to John and Amanda’s first date playing XBOX. More tears of joy came during the special dances, my favorite dance a tie between John and Makayla’s number, in which she stood on his toes, and Amanda/John/Makayla’s family dance.
Before everyone got jiggy on the dance floor, one last surprise awaited the newlyweds — the Funny Little People! I’d designed a number of wedding albums at Essence Photo & Video that featured the Funny Little People, but this was my first up-close encounter. Strange as they may seem, they’re really quite funny, and really got the couple laughing.
Looking back on John and Amanda’s special day, I’m so happy for them and how far they’ve come. Baby Klemmer is due this summer! I know Makayla’s going to make a fantastic big sister. Congrats!
